Walking As A Child Of God

What does it mean to walk as a child of God?

To my understanding it means to live our lives doing God’s will. We as created beings can add nothing to God, there is nothing we can give God, that He does not already have, for He IS all. So what is this doing God’s will all about?

Well Our loving Father in Heaven created us in Love to be Love. Out of Love He made us and holds us in Being, our very existence is dependent upon God. When we do God’s will we do what is right and good and it is all for our own well being.

We call God our heavenly Father; and like any Father His will for us, His children is to see us thrive, to see us become our best selves. God our heavenly Father is perfect and therefore His will for us is perfect.

As an adopted child of God that we are; having accepted God’s Mercy and Love through His only begotten Son Jesus Christ, we are to walk in the way Jesus taught us to walk.

He taught us to have compassion for others, think of how Our Lord Jesus spent His life among us as one of us. He did not have to suffer with us as a man. He did so out of love for us. The word compassion means to suffer with someone, to accompany another person in their passion, their suffering. To be willing to suffer with them. ( by the way I am not brilliant, I heard this definition of the word compassion in a movie and then I looked up the definition of compassion myself) Mother Theresa knew this when she lived her vocation as a Missionary of Charity. She lived in the same conditions as the people she served.

I am not saying that we should all go out, give up all we have and become missionaries to serve the poor, but I am saying that we should give with our whole hearts when we give, not simply a shallow gesture or a few words and more often we should be trying to understand and be there for each-other and be genuine in our love.

The very way that Christ Jesus lived His life on earth as one of us, gives us an example of how to live.

I am not able to give all the examples here of the virtues Jesus taught us, nor am I trying to do so. I am simply pointing to the life of our Lord as the example to us of how to walk as a child of God. He gave us a very practical example of how to live and how to Love one another.

Some may say Jesus was divine; I can’t do as He did. But I say to you - He was fully divine and also fully human and in His humanity He teaches us how to live a virtuous life.

These are my thoughts for tonight. As always I hope that what I have said will help you on your spiritual journey.

Much Love in Christ Jesus
